Vapers Rights Are Under Attack!

The rights of vapers and e-cig users around the country have been threatened in recent months as officials introduce legislation to ban usage. The Consumer Advocates for Smoke-Free Alternatives (CASAA) is an organization aimed at informing the public about the successes of former smokers after switching over to smoke-free alternatives. They’ve been fighting an uphill battle against legislation lately that limits access and usage of vaping devices. (Not cool, right?). In an effort to organize the vape community and help keep you informed we have created a handy cheat-sheet for what’s going Nationwide and let you know how YOU can keep the rights of vapers everywhere!

The first case is in Minneapolis, MN. Officials are pushing to make cigarettes more readily available than flavored e-cig and vape products. This would include introducing a ban on these products in convenience stores and gas stations and limiting them to specialty retailers. Oxford Published Test Shows - Appealing flavors DO NOT attract teens to e-Cigarettes

Here at Eco-Cigs and Sapphyre, we believe in a healthier lifestyle, and stand behind the fact that, e-cigarettes are much less hazardous than traditional combustible tobacco cigarettes, use of e-cigarettes by smokers could greatly reduce the health harms due to smoking. There is a concern from some that e-cigarettes might attract teens who do not smoke, especially if e-cigarettes were offered in flavors that teens may find inviting. We do not want to see teens smoking and are very focused on ensuring that we are creating products that support our philosophies.

A study, just published on January 12th, by a board of prolific doctors based in Pittsburgh, clearly show that nonsmoking teens have a very low interest in using electronic cigarettes, even when presented with a variety of flavors such as raspberry, bubble gum, gummy bear and vanilla bean. The board of doctors include:

Saul Shiffma, PhD of PinneyAssociates and a professor of psychology at the University of Pittsburgh states: ”Concerns about initiation of e-cigarette use by nonsmoking teens have focused on the expected and assumed appeal of flavors. It is important to replace assumptions with data. Our study shows that flavor descriptors, even those expected to appeal to youth, do not do so.” He went on to say, ”This is reassuring because nonsmoking teens would gain no health benefit from using e-cigarettes, since they don't smoke. In contrast, adult smokers could dramatically reduce health risks by switching from tobacco cigarette smoking to e-cigarette use."

Researchers surveyed 216 nonsmoking teens ages 13 to 17 and 432 adult smokers of combustible tobacco cigarettes about their interest in a range of potential e-cigarette flavors.

Asked on a scale of 0 to 10 about interest in using e-cigarettes, offered in a list of flavors, teens reported minimal interest, and teens' interest did not vary across flavors. "Flavors just didn't seem to matter to these nonsmoking teens," said Saul Shiffman.

Among adult smokers of combustible tobacco cigarettes, interest in e-cigarette flavors was greatest among recent users of e-cigarettes, followed by past users and never users. Recent e-cigarette users indicated an interest in flavors such as vanilla bean, double espresso and raspberry, none of which appealed to nonsmoking teens.

"For adult smokers of combustible tobacco cigarettes, switching completely to e-cigarettes should lead to substantial health benefits," commented Dr. Shiffman. "Knowledge about which flavors appeal most to adult smokers without appealing to nonsmoking teens presents an opportunity to greatly reduce health risks among adult smokers without increasing the risks for youth."

Stop Smoking Cigarettes, One Persons Story

I had tried to quit smoking many times. I tried everything, from going cold turkey, the patch, gum, hypnosis, the pill, and a very mild form of shock therapy using a rubber-band on my wrist. Still, I could not stop smoking. I hated cigarettes, the smell, the coughing, burned clothing, etc etc.. but I did not have the willpower to quit using them. I started to become depressed over my addiction. I tried a few eCigs, however could not get the needed satisfaction from them. Several factors played out, lack of flavor, lack of smoke (vapor) were the main issues. Then I found Sapphyre, everything changed.

I literally cannot smoke cigarettes anymore. I cannot stand the smell of a cigarette. I can smell smokers everywhere now, especially a person whom has just had a cigarette, then walks past me in a store, the stench is nauseating.

Since making the switch to Sapphyre, I can smell everything now. The rain, my wives perfume, the grass, the ocean air. I was missing so much in my life!

Once in a while I will grab a cigarette from a friend and try to smoke it. I can’t get more than 3 drags before I trash it. It is gross, and I hate them. I guess I do it to prove to myself that I have finally quit. Before I started using Sapphyre, a test like that always ended with me smoking again. Now, it makes me sick and glad I have an electronic cigarette.

Almost everybody I know who uses e-cigs, either uses them exclusively or smokes 60%-90% less. These kind of numbers are UNHEARD OF compared to any quit smoking method I know of. (Disclaimer: e-cigarettes are not a stop smoking device)

My mom has smoked cigarettes since I can remember and my wife is a cigarette smoker as well. My mom told me about e-cigarettes and how they helped her quit, and she has tried repeatedly to quit smoking as well. I continued to smoke for a few weeks when I wanted to, and used my Sapphyre when I found it convenient. I found myself using my e-cigarette more and more and my tobacco cigarettes less and less. Within a month or two, I could not stand the smell of a cigarette…

Being a previous smoker myself and losing my mother and father to lung cancer in 2005. I take the job of educating the public on the benefits of using electronic cigarettes quite personally. If electronic cigarettes were available to my parents, they would still be here today.

You could spend hours upon hours, as I have, learning extensively about the 4,000-plus chemicals you’ll find in the smoke produced by cigarettes. I have compiled a short list of chemicals that are put into the traditional cigarettes you enjoy on a daily basis. These are common in most cigarettes produced today.

Ammonia: Household cleaner

Senators Go After Tobacco Grandfather Date

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Three federal lawmakers have formally requested that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rethink their proposed grandfather date included in the agency's regulations currently on the table as the date creates an unfair market advantage.

The regulations, which were released in April 2014, would apply to cigars, electronic cigarettes and other tobacco products. The proposed regulations set a grandfather date of Feb. 15, 2007, the exact date applied to cigarettes, for the newly deemed products.

U.S. Reps. John Boehner (R-Ohio), Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Fred Upton (R-Mich.) have made a request to Sylvia Burwell, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, asking that she consider the date inappropriate for the newly deemed products. The legislators raised concerns that the date impedes innovation and imposes unnecessary regulatory burdens and obstacles on the FDA and the industries.

February 15, 2007 was the date that the Tobacco Control Act was introduced to the 110th Congress and was therefore adopted as the date. The date does create inequality between currently regulated tobacco products and newly deemed tobacco products.

The U.S. Reps explain.

"Because of the passage of time, many pre-February 15, 2007 cigars are unavailable for regulatory comparison. Additionally, most e-vapor products did not exist at that time, meaning there will be virtually no 'predicate' products in these categories. Further, FDA did not even consider e-vapor products to be tobacco products until 2011.

"Even if such 'predicate' products could be found, manufacturers would still be required to file Substantial Equivalence applications with FDA, adding dramatically to FDA's enormous backlog of such applications. As a practical matter, many newly deemed products could be removed from the market. For those products lacking a 'predicate,' the cost and barriers surrounding a new product submission would largely prevent new entries, posing an unwarranted regulatory barrier to innovation."

Lawmakers have stated that cigarettes, smokeless tobacco and roll-your-own tobacco did not face this type of barrier to market entry because the grandfather date for these products was two years before the regulation date. The Tobacco Control Act was enacted in 2009. If the FDA publishes its final rule next year, the grandfather date for newly deemed products will be eight years before regulation.

"This is a critical issue, and we request that manufacturers of newly deemed tobacco products have the same market entry opportunities as manufacturers of cigarettes and other currently regulated tobacco products. Specifically, manufacturers of these products suggested in comments to FDA that the grandfather date for them be set at either April 25, 2014 (the date the proposed deeming regulation was published) or the date the final rule is published," they wrote. "We believe either is preferable to the current proposal, as it will treat equally those products regulated in 2009 and those FDA seeks to regulate now. Any final provision on this issue should ensure equity among all regulated tobacco products and encourage innovation while achieving the purpose of the law."

The American Vaping Association (AVA) responded positively to the Senators request.

"We are thrilled to see prominent members of Congress call for the FDA to make changes to its proposed rules for vapor products," said George Conley, president of AVA. "Without significant revisions, the proposed regulatory regime threatens both public health and thousands of American small- and medium-sized businesses. The FDA's own economic analysis recognizes that the regulation will lead to the vast majority of vapor products being removed from the market."

For all the hype, Black Friday isn’t the day to find the best deals, nor is it Cyber Monday, according to new data from Adobe Systems Inc., which has collected information on one trillion visits to 4,500 retailing websites since 2008.

In a tactic commonly used in Black Friday “door-busters,” retailers may dangle a discount on their websites only to run out of the product quickly.

Shoppers who don't want to face the crowded stores on Thanksgiving or Black Friday wait for that traditional online holiday shopping day, Cyber Monday. However, according to Adobe, the Monday after Thanksgiving is no longer the best day for online shopping.

Here's why:
Every year, sales start earlier and earlier, even now, many stores are open ON THANKSGIVING, so you're better off shopping earlier to catch the best deals and ensure that you are at the top of the shipping queue to ensure you get the item you purchased.

Word of the Year is VAPE - Oxford Dictionary

As 2014 draws to a close, Oxford Dictionary's Word of the Year is chosen and this year, 2014, the word is both a noun and a verb.

Although there is a shortlist of strong contenders, the word Vape has dominated.

What does vape mean?

So, what does vape mean? It started as an abbreviation of vapor or vaporize. However, the word vaping existed before the phenomenon. Although e-cigarettes weren’t commercially available until the 21^st century, an article published in 1983 that appeared in the publication New Society entitled ‘Why do People Smoke?’ contains the first known use of the term. Rob Stepney, who authored the article, described what was then a hypothetical device:

“an inhaler or ‘non-combustible’ cigarette, looking much like the real thing, but…delivering a metered dose of nicotine vapour. (The new habit, if it catches on, would be known as vaping.)”

However, research shows that it wasn’t until 2009 that the word vape (and vaping) started being used in mainstream language.

The OxfordDictionaries.com definition was added in August 2014:

The verb means to inhale and exhale the vapor produced by an electronic cigarette or similar device. While both the device and the action can also be known as a vape.

The associated noun vaping is also listed.

Vape is also the modifier for other nouns, creating new compound nouns which are growing in popularity. The most common of these are vape pen and vape shop, and there is also recent evidence for vape lounge, vape fluid, vape juice, and others. Related coinages include e-juice, carto, and vaporium – as well as the retronym tobacco cigarette for traditional cigarettes. (A retronym is a new term created from an existing word in order to distinguish the original word from a later development – for example, acoustic guitar developing after the advent of the electric guitar.)

Why was vape chosen?

As e-cigarettes (or e-cigs) have become much more common, so vape has grown significantly in popularity. You are thirty times more likely to come across the word vape than you were two years ago, and usage has more than doubled in the past year.

According to Oxford Dictionaries, usage of the word "vape" spiked in April 2014 when New York City banned indoor vaping and the UK opened its first vape cafe - The Vape Lab - in London, which made the term a clear winner for its Word of the Year title.
